Do you need ski insurance?
Standard travel insurance often excludes winter sports unless you add cover. Ski insurance adds medical cover for skiing injuries and mountain rescue, plus cover for equipment, ski passes and lessons you cannot use.
What to check in a ski policy
- Medical and repatriation limits.
- Mountain rescue and helicopter evacuation.
- Off-piste skiing: whether it is covered, and whether you need a guide.
- Your own and hired equipment.
- Unused ski pass, lessons and hire if you are injured.
- Piste closure and lack of snow.
- Any conditions, such as following local safety advice.
A GHIC is not travel insurance
A UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives you access to state healthcare in EU countries on the same terms as residents. It does not cover mountain rescue or repatriation to the UK, so take a GHIC and travel insurance.
Specialist and mainstream insurers
- Snowcard is a specialist winter sports insurer.
- Dogtag offers travel insurance with winter sports cover.
- Columbus Direct offers travel insurance with optional winter sports cover.
- Protectivity offers sports travel insurance, including ski racing.
- Campbell Irvine offers consumer ski cover as well as cover for the travel trade.
Buy when you book
Buy your policy when you book the holiday, not when you travel, so cancellation cover applies from the start. This page is general information, not financial advice. Read the policy documents before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
Does ski insurance cover off-piste skiing?
Some policies do, often only within resort boundaries or with a qualified guide. Read the off-piste wording before you go.
Is ATOL protection the same as insurance?
No. ATOL protects your money if a UK travel company selling flight-inclusive packages fails. It does not cover injury, personal cancellation or lost equipment.
